Huskers Survive Spartan ScareThanks to Niles Paul and a more fundamentally sound second half defense, the Huskers improved to 2-0 by beating San Jose State 35-12. But after the game, no one seemed particularly happy with the performance.
The Huskers struggled to a 14-9 halftime lead on the strength of one lone touchdown drive by the offense and a 49 yard interception return by defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. But the Spartans held a 221-111 advantage in total offense and missed an opportunity to be ahead at the half with two missed field goals, a missed extra point and sloppy execution of a two-minute offense that turned a potential touchdown drive into one that yielded three points.
The Huskers finally came to life early in the fourth quarter when after a Quentin Castille fumble at midfield, San Jose State drove to the NU 9. But the defense held the Spartans to no gain on consecutive plays and forced a field goal to narrow the Husker lead to 14-12. Then Niles Paul broke an 85 yard kickoff return for his first career touchdown and after that, the game was in hand as Nebraska scored two more touchdowns for the final margin.
The win came at a cost to the defensive line as end Barry Turner was injured in the first half when a teammate rolled up on his leg. No specifics on the injury were immediately available after the game, but head coach Bo Pelini said the injury was 'major.'
